No Traffic on a Saturday? Well, No Cars, Anyway
Javier Hernandez writes about New York’s first Summer Streets. Manhattan opened up more than 11 kilometres of streets to pedestrians, cyclists, skaters, dancers and anyone else interested in coming out and taking advantage of the event. Seen as a great success by the NYC Commissioner of Transportation, Janette Sadik-Khan, the event brought thousands out of their homes and onto New York’s otherwise car congested streets.

For six hours on Sunday, cars are banned on six miles of North Portland's streets, leaving them to walkers, cyclists, joggers and in-line skates
On Sunday, June 22, 2008, Portland, Oregon held its first Sunday Parkway event. The event drew an estimate of 15 000 people to come out and enjoy Portland’s Sunday Parkway. At the release of this article future of the event was still unsure, nevertheless in June and August of 2009 Portland held not one, but three Sunday Parkway events.

Sunday Streets Garners Support from Neighbourhoods
San Francisco’s Sunday Streets program was initially met with some resistance from local business owners. Several months after, the local merchants changed their opinions and are now eagerly looking forward to the event. The time and date has been adjusted and expectations are that the Sunday Streets will bring in foot traffic and business on a day where typically business would be slow.
